Health Tips

Digestive System Basics

When your food is poorly digested, you absorb nutrients that aren't fully broken down or usable which causes many problems.  Because your immune system will attack and defend your body against partially digested foods that get into the bloodstream.  The immune system doesn't recognize it as food.  It sees a toxic invader, and destroys the food.  When this happens you don't get the benefit of that food, and you weaken your immune system by using it in a role it shouldn't be involved in.  In other words, you are using the immune system and metabolic enzymes daily to clean the bloodstream of undigested food particles, instead of having their full strength used to protect and repair your body.

According to the father of enzyme research, Dr. Edward Howell, the digestive system is designed to break down approximately half of the food we eat.  Dr. Howell was one of America's pioneering enzyme researchers and in his classic book "Enzyme Nutrition" he explains how the digestive system is designed to work.  Before fire was discovered, man and animals alike could only eat raw food, like raw meat, plants or fruits and vegetables.  He explained how raw foods have a 40/60 ratio of enzymes.  Which means a raw food like an apple has live food enzymes within the apple which break down and digest 40 to 60 percent of that apple.  This leaves the remaining 40 to 60% of the apple to be broken down by the digestive system.

Raw foods are enzymatically alive which means these foods have live enzymes within them to help digest 40 to 60% of that particular food.  Since cooking destroys enzymes, cooked and processed foods are enzymatically dead which means there are no live enzymes within that food to help with digestion.  These dead foods place a lot of stress on the digestive system, the pancreas, the immune system and thus, your whole body.  Before genetic engineering and irradiation, our raw foods had the proper 40/60 ratio.  But today many raw foods are genetically altered or they have been irradiated for longer shelf life, killing the enzymes in the food. Which means that even the raw food we eat today, if it isn't organic, could be in a 20/80 ratio or worse...  On top of this, we are already asking the human body to break down 100% of the cooked and processed foods and supplements we eat, and now, possibly 80% or more of the raw foods we eat.

Ways To Improve Your Digestion

The first way is in the pre digestive stage, which lasts approximately 45 to 60 minutes in the upper part of the stomach.  Dr. Howell calls this the enzyme stomach because this is where the live enzymes within a raw food start pre digestion of that food.  You can improve your digestion ability substantially by adding a digestive enzyme to break down the food as it sits in the upper stomach.  This is very important because it will help to conserve your body’s enzyme supply.

Lack of digestive enzymes affects the pancreas.  Remember the digestive system is designed to break down approximately half of the food.  When we eat cooked and processed foods, we're asking the digestive system to break down 100% of the food we've eaten.  This means every time we eat these foods, the pancreas must produce twice as many enzymes as it is meant to and so it is working double time.  Doing this year after year puts a tremendous strain on the pancreas.  And eventually stresses our immune system and reduces our metabolic enzyme supply.  Autopsies have been done on people that eat mostly cooked and processed foods. The results show the pancreas is dangerously enlarged, poorly functioning and quite often on the verge of breaking down.  When your enzyme supplies runs low, you become ill.  There are three ways to conserve your enzyme supply so that it doesn’t run low.

Eating organically grown raw food is one way.  The second way is to take digestive enzymes every time you eat.  The third way is to take digestive enzymes on an empty stomach.

How to Beat Those Seasonal Allergies

Yes, you may be feeling sniffly, a bit headachy, and congested, perhaps even coughing as well.  I am seeing the proof of the high activity of allergies in many clients live blood.

Let’s look at a few ways to reduce the effects dramatically (as I managed to do for myself – no more antihistamines for me!!!!)  As well, you reduce the chances of interrupting liver activity or causing liver stress by taking antihistamines.

First of all, you need to boost your immune system. In the case of allergies, this actually serves to calm your overactive immune system.  The Power Drink recipe you received with your Blood Analysis for your healthy start to your morning works well to strengthen your immune system.  Add grapes to it to further reduce allergies.  Don’t forget the bee pollen in the drink!

Drink plenty of distilled or reverse osmosis (the better/ more alkaline) water to cleanse your whole system.

Eat plenty of green vegetables throughout the day.  We need to help you become good and alkaline!

Eat Right for Your Type to give your body further resistance to allergies.

Try the product called quercetin with bioflavonoids to further reduce your symptoms.  (Swiss brand is easy to locate in drug and health stores).

Take Fenuthyme to reduce mucous

Have you ever considered a cleanse? It is a great idea to:

  • REMOVE unwanted toxins
  • REDUCE stress on your immune system
  • REJUVINATE the body for optimal health

Cleansing several times a year maximizes seasonal balance and well being. It helps support the systems dealing with our weather changes and allergy seasons. Not only that, you will be stronger and better able to deal with flu and cold seasons as well! Some choose to cleanse due to stress, poor digestion, overconsumption, too much alcohol, or when exposed to toxins such as cigarette smoke and environmental pollutants (as we sure are experiencing now!) Cleansing and detoxification helps remove these toxins, releasing burden and tension from the body.

There are various types of cleanses:

  • Liver cleanse - which helps the liver do its important job of filtering the blood and aiding in elimination of bacteria, chemicals and toxic wastes from the body
  • Parasite cleanse - which most of us have due to pets, travel, and the food we eat. You need a complete parasite cleanse to remove the various life stages of them. You will feel more energized!
  • Intestinal Tract cleanse - psyllium seed products help prevent toxins from being absorbed into the bloodstream and support the intestinal muscle strength. It works like a small scrub brush cleansing buildup along the intestinal wall so food nutrients are better absorbed. Acidophilus is important after this product.

Remember- while cleansing: Drink 6-10 cups of pure water a day (This helps flush toxins out of your body), increase your intake of whole grains (not wheat), legumes and vegetables, reduce or eliminate alcohol, sugar, reduce red meat, wheat flour products and fatty foods, exercise moderately to stimulate circulation, respiration and movement of toxins out of your body.

Your Immune System

This Health Tip is all about stress and what you can do to keep it from weakening your Immune System…… besides, who needs the flu or a cold during these glorious summer months?

It is being well discussed now in the medical industry that there really is something behind the eastern philosophy that the brain (your emotions) and your health (ie. strength of your immune system) are directly related.  Yes, what you think and feel does affect your health!  When you keep a positive attitude and a smile on your face, you are giving your body a greater chance to buffer against disease. It does help to be an optimist!

Stress will bother you less, you will feel more energized, and keep disease away!

Aside from Eating 4 Your Blood Type, drinking lots of clean water and getting regular exercise, here are a few tips to deal better with stress - and hence, keep your immune system strong!

Relaxation is important.  Take a few minutes to pause and close your eyes.  Picture the most beautiful/serene place you have ever been and put yourself back there.  Feel the air movement, smell the fragrances, enjoy the sounds again…… note how much better you deal with people after this.  Try Tai Chi or Yoga- not only to enjoy the stretching techniques, but to learn how to meditate. Calming the fast pace of your mind is so important!  Self talk will also boost your confidence - remember - positive thinking directly affects your health!

  • I want to feel more energized
  • I want to think more clearly
  • I wish to look and feel better
  • I hope to experience greater self confidence
  • I want to be happier about my family, work and my life
  • I want to keep calm
  • I want to enjoy wellness and better health

Cancer - Of Course It's Scary!

Poor diet, environmental toxins, lack of antioxidants, viruses, chronic stress and feelings of hopelessness are some of the possible reasons why the body allows cancer cells to grow.  A healthy immune system will deal with viruses in a vicious way.  Although genetics or family history may predispose some to acquiring cancer, it can be factored out with super nutritional care.  Regardless of your genetic makeup, if you keep your toxic load under control and strengthen your immunity, cancer can be avoided.

Natural Therapies work wonders!

Several fruits and vegetables are especially rich in cancer-blocking agents.   Remember to eat them according to your blood type!   Broccoli (great for everyone), cabbage, tomatoes are rich in lycopene; brussel sprouts, turnips and mustard greens are notorious cancer fighters.  Citrus fruits are rich in D-limonene, another powerful anticarcinogenic that stops toxic agents from damaging the DNA of our cells.  Don’t forget to start your day with a glass of pure water with a squeeze of fresh lemon in it!

Natural plant sterols are now well noted to fight cancer as well.  Even having a capful of chlorophyll in your glasses of pure water (6-8 per day) will aid in keeping your immune system strong.  Green herbal tea (Japanese) has amazing anti-cancer properties.  It can count toward your water intake each day.   It is possible to take in a capsule form as well.  Avoid garden and household toxins wherever possible.   Plants sprayed with water mixed with some dish detergent will aid in removal of insects rather than insecticide.

Keep your bedroom window open a bit at all times for fresh air when you are sleeping.

The Benefits Of Water

How many folks do you know who say they don't want to drink anything before going to bed because they'll have to get up during the night!!  Something else I didn't know ...  I asked a Doctor why do people need to urinate so much at night time.

Answer from a Cardiac Doctor:  Gravity holds water in the lower part of your body when you are upright (legs swell).  When you lie down and the lower body (legs, etc.) is level with the kidneys, it is then that the kidneys remove the water because it is easier.

Correct time to drink water?  This is very important as it comes from a Cardiac Specialist!  Drinking water at a certain time maximizes its effectiveness on the body:  2 glasses of water after waking up - helps activate internal organs.  1 glass of water 30 minutes before a meal not with it - helps digestion.  1 glass of water before taking a bath - helps lower blood pressure (who knew???).  1 glass of water before going to bed - avoids stroke or heart attack (good to know!)

My Physician told me that water at bed time will also help prevent night time leg cramps.  Your leg muscles are seeking hydration when they cramp and wake you up with a Charlie Horse.   (this I know for sure!)

An added tip.....remember that in high heat, when you sweat, you lose electrolytes and minerals that cause imbalances in your body.   Do what I do whether during a sport or working out, add a tablespoon of Mineral Matrix to your bottle of water.   Let me know if you need any!

The Pineapple

The Pineapple is a member of the bromeliad family.   It is extremely rare that bromeliads produce edible fruit.  The pineapple is the only available edible bromeliad today.

It is a multiple fruit.  One pineapple is actually made up of dozens of individual flowerets that grow together to form the entire fruit.  Each scale on a pineapple is evidence of a separate flower.  Pineapples stop ripening the minute they are picked.  No special way of storing them will help ripen them further.   Colour is relatively unimportant in determining ripeness.  Choose your pineapple by smell.  If it smells fresh, tropical and sweet, it will be a good fruit.

The more scales on the pineapple, the sweeter and juicier the taste.  After you cut off the top, you can plant it.   It should grow much like a sweet potato will.  This delicious fruit is not only sweet and tropical; it also offers many benefits to our health.  Pineapple is a remarkable fruit.  We find it enjoyable because of its lush, sweet and exotic flavor, but it may also be one of the most healthful foods available today.  If we take a more detailed look at it, we will find that pineapple is valuable for easing indigestion, arthritis or sinusitis.

The juice has an anthelmintic effect; it helps get rid of intestinal worms.  Let's look at how pineapple affects other conditions.  Pineapple is high in manganese, a mineral that is critical to development of strong bones and connective tissue.  A cup of fresh pineapple will give you nearly 75% of the recommended daily amount.  It is particularly helpful to older adults, whose bones tend to become brittle with age.  Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme, is the key to pineapple's value.  Proteolytic means "breaks down protein", which is why pineapple is known to be a digestive aid.  It helps the body digest proteins more efficiently.  Bromelain is also considered an effective anti-inflammatory.

Regular ingestion of at least one half cup of fresh pineapple daily is purported to relieve painful joints common to osteoarthritis.  It also produces mild pain relief.  In Germany , bromelain is approved as a post-injury medication because it is thought to reduce inflammation and swelling.  Orange juice is a popular liquid for those suffering from a cold because it is high in Vitamin C.  Fresh pineapple is not only high in this vitamin, but because of the Bromelain, it has the ability to reduce mucous in the throat.  If you have a cold with a productive cough, add pineapple to your diet.  It is commonly used in Europe as a post-operative measure to cut mucous after certain sinus and throat operations.  Those individuals who eat fresh pineapple daily report fewer sinus problems related to allergies.  In and of itself, pineapple has a very low risk for allergies.

Pineapple is also known to discourage blood clot development.  This makes it a valuable dietary addition for frequent fliers and others who may be at risk for blood clots. An old folk remedy for morning sickness is fresh pineapple juice.  It really works! Fresh juice and some nuts first thing in the morning often make a difference.  It's also good for a healthier mouth.  The fresh juice discourages plaque growth.
